Arts & Culture in Pennsylvania's FY2010 Budget

Philaculture.org: "State governments, like all sectors of the economy, have been hit hard by the national recession, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Declining revenues and a difficult economy forced the state to create a leaner FY2010 budget, down $500 million from FY2009’s total of $28.3 billion. This has led to cuts in many areas, including arts and culture. This article outlines the status of arts and cultural funding in the recently-adopted FY2010 budget."

Dropping the film tax benefits by 44% may hurt Pittsburgh more than it is aware of. There have been, and still are, about a dozen large films in Pittsburgh this past year. For some reason, it's been a great draw. At one point there were more films working in Pittsburgh than Hollywood, which could say something about Hollywood's economic status. With these new tax laws coming into place, we may see a shift of new films coming into Pittsburgh. We could potentially see a significant drop, possibly, a smaller drop. But the producers of films are going to note Pittsburgh's economic stress, and see how it will hurt their budget, rather than helping Pittsburgh's economy as their primary concern.
