A Theater Scene Sparkles in Seattle

NYTimes.com: "LIKE a reminder of theater’s past, the face of the playwright August Wilson stares out from a gleaming glass door set in a 12-foot steel portal at the top of August Wilson Way here, a sloping side street behind the Seattle Repertory Theater."

Glad to see that the theatre scene is thriving here. I know that recently the city has been known as a popular 'middle ground' for theatre goers - and thus garnered much press regarding it's optimal broad theatre demographic; subsequently making it a popular out of town try-out city. I hope more local theatre is able to survive in the shadow of the multi-million dollar blockbusters that are opening so frequently.

I am really excited by the continuing trend of the decentralization of the American theater away from New York. At first it was only to other big theater cities like LA and Chicago, but the trend has moved towards other cities and even smaller locations throughout the country. Like Josh, I feel that if the only reason that Seattle is getting a reputation as a theater town is its position as a large out-of-town performance location, that the local theater community needs to do some more work. Not all great regional theaters have to be content generators for the large corporate theater world. They can be perfectly successful without this link to NYC.
