Public presents "The Little Foxes"

Post Gazette: "Of all the reactions to 'The Little Foxes' showing up on the Pittsburgh Public Theater schedule this season, Ted Pappas hadn't expected this:
'I don't think I've ever announced a show where more people have said to me, 'I loved the movie. I can't wait to see the play.' So I got a reaction I did not anticipate. I think these days titles sell and stars sell.'"

Two main comments i have from this article. (1) I don't believe star power always necessarily brings ticket sales in. Maybe for the first few weeks, but just as major block-buster flops prove, fame and financial success do not always go hand in hand. (2) I absolutely loved the quote concerning theatre being relevant even if its not modern. I'm so bored of theatre that modernizes a play to make it relevant. Why bother. If you have to make it modern to be relevant, its probably not relevant. There can be other reasons to modernize a show, but that sole reason is often an attempt to bring relevance to a show. Not to mention, period pieces can still be meaningful, the text may have to be adapted but the message should still exist whether or not the play is in modern day or in the Rennaissance.

I have always wanted to see this show. I volunteered at a Art Museum where I live for a benefit honoring Lillian Hellman and her work. I found it so fascinating that Lillian Hellman grew up in the South and based this particular play off of her own family. After she moved away her family wouldn't have anything to do with her because they said that it showed them in a bad light and the South too. Those are some of the reasons why I have wanted to see this play and now I can. This review makes this rendition of the play seem great and the one to go see.
