Night-time theater returns to Iraq as courage grows

Reuters: "As the clock strikes 8 p.m. Baghdad time, the curtains sweep apart at the Iraqi National Theater in what actors hope is a return to regular night-time performances 6-1/2 years after the U.S. invasion."

It's so cliche to say that art brings people together but its cliche because its true. It's also interesting to see what kind of art is chosen for such a new beginning. It's not surprising to see that the first piece is safe and friendly. Wait a few years until the 'we have free speech and can vent our frustrations' shows come out. Then we'll know America succeeded in photocopying itself.

I am very happy to see the impact that theatre has on all people. It says a lot that Iraqi theatre has been allowed to return to the people. At times of struggle people really need ways to express themselves as well as being able to take a few hours away from the reality of their daily lives. It also makes a very large statement that they are getting so many people to the theatre. I hope this trend continues for them and that it expands to more and more theatres in Iraq.
