Five Questions for a Rockette

NYTimes.com: "Being a Rockette is more than high kicks, ivory smiles and precision spot-turns. There are six-show days, slippery tap shoes and Santas who miss their cues.
“It’s crazy how challenging this job is,” says Amy Love Osgood, who has been performing as a Rockette since 2005."

80 cast members. I wonder how large the stage management team must be on that. I didn't catch whether there are two complete sets of 40 which are always the same or of they trade in and out. If they do trade then how do the daily calls look? Separated by teams? individual people? This must take so much more planning behind the scenes than anyone would imagine.

I am amazed that a mom of two is a rocket! But beyond that, the 80 cast members is ridiculous. And being on your feet for 4 performances a day, while maintaining a smile and the correct everything is very intense. And amazing. I wonder how many injuries occur and if they have alternates, or just use the other cast to fill in. I've never thought about how big the rockettes really are, cast wise. Like Elize said, managing them must be a nightmare!

Wow! I had no idea there were so many! 80 people must be a handful when it comes to scheduling. By the way the article sets it up, it seems like they break into two completely separate groups of 40, but I could be wrong. Either way, some serious planning must go into the scheduling of that many people for one show.

P.S. Congrats to Amy Love Osgood for being a Rand a mother of two. That's impressive!

I find it would be an interesting article to compare all the iconic dancers to see how their lives are different from each others. For example, how is the work different between a ballerina, a rockette, and a Las Vegas show girl? What I liked was how driven this woman was. It took her five times to win the audition. I think that alone proves to you that the girls that make up the Rockettes are dedicated artists and that is why they are so good at what they do. They know what is expected and they do what it takes for the result.

I agree with Elize: insanity! Two casts of 40--wow. I'm thinking of how long and ridiculous those 6 show days must be. How on earth do you handle that? And the SM team must be ridiculous and, I hope, well paid. To organize and run this nonsense day after day must be a ton of work, and hopefully a lot of fun. I was secretly hoping to go see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular while they are in town. This is some great info to keep in the back of my head while I watch. Wow.
