Broadway, from 'Hamlet' to 'Donuts'

Post Gazette: "The stars are out on Broadway. That's what they always say, but consider a list of Jude Law, Julia Stiles, Hugh Jackman, Angela Lansbury, Daniel Craig, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sienna (scourge of Pittsburgh) Miller, Richard Thomas, Carrie Fisher, Lynn Redgrave and more, all now up-and-running or in previews."

It's disappointing to read such a negative review of Law's Hamlet. I was at first opposed to the idea, but Law's potential for soft-spokeness has grown on me, as well as the powerful set designs. Too bad; as Rawson points out, Hamlet is more of an ensemble piece than is let on and it seems the other actors let the play down.

The other new plays mentioned seem very interesting, especially Superior Donuts. The Understudy marks a trend I love - the penchant of theater for theatrical self-awareness. Noises Off comes to mind as an excellent example. Using a medium to critique the medium itself is always appreciated.
