Shakespeare’s Props

Props: "As yesterday (April 23) was William Shakespeare’s unofficial birthday, I thought I’d write a bit about props and Shakespeare. At the Public Theatre here in New York City, we’re starting to gear up for Shakespeare in the Park, starting with Twelfth Night. It will feature Anne Hathaway (the Bride Wars star, not Shakespeare’s wife)."

The mention of the stage direction "pursued by bear" in A Winter's Tale makes me giggle. It harks back to our discussion in PTM about what department animals fall under (props for lack of better placement).

It would be wonderful if any of the items indicated on the prop lists actually survived. My understanding of theatrical costume during Shakespeare's time is that it was relatively simple and not constructed for the performances; more likely, clothes would be re-appropriated garments or those cast off by patrons. I wonder if props were collected the same way or if some were actually fabricated (fake heads perhaps?)
