Cirque du Soleil, in New York (Mostly) to Stay

NYTimes.com: "Not content with performing in 271 cities in 32 countries and attracting 11 million customers last year, Cirque du Soleil, the Montreal-based circus empire, will establish a permanent presence in New York City next year."

I agree that Cirque may be in danger of loosing its special niche in the performing arts world. While their work is still spectacular in quality, I wonder if they are beginning to get too theatrical. From the start, Cirque was based on circus performing interwoven with a storyline, now it seems much less about the circus and more about the story. Cirque’s strongest characteristic is their world-class artistry and their amazing skill of combining circus and high, avant-guarde art.

I think it will be interesting for Cirque to put in a permanent show. I agree with Chris that the company has become to theatrical, since it did start out very much a circus. It should be nice for tourist though having the summer extravaganza in the Radio City Music hall to offset the Rockettes.

While I'm certainly not a fan of monopolies, this sounds a good move on the part of many of the venues in NY. Its a shame that one of the only ways to see Cirque in the US is to head out to Vegas -- its traveling tent shows will never have the production value that a full blown, in house show would have. I think its a good move both for New York, the Garden, and Cirque to try and establish another permanent home for the company. I'm sure its ticket sales will do as well as Crique ticket sales always do, will attract more people to the city, and will keep our friends in the industry that much more gainfully employed.
