Cultural Post at White House

NYTimes.com: "President Barack Obama has established a staff position in the White House to oversee arts and culture in the Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs under Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser, a White House official confirmed."

This was an interesting article. I didn't expect Obama to create a new position like this. It should be fascinating to watch and see what this new spot does.

I think it's fantastic that such a powerful part of America is getting in touch with the performing arts. To really understand what the country is feeling and how things are going, you have to look at the art being produced, not the latest opinion poll. In the last few years of the Bush Administration, comedy routines, artwork, and shows sprang up all over the country criticizing Bush's policies. I firmly believe that these cultural artifacts tell us more than any poll every will. Hopefully this new position will act as a subtle connection between the people and their government in a way that voting cannot do.
