High school un-cancels production of 'Rent'

Los Angeles Times: "After a flap that raised the ire of the gay community and ruffled feathers across the Newport Beach campus, drama students will be allowed to stage a production of 'Rent,' a musical about struggling artists in New York City."

Like I said before, the cuts made to a script, whether whole or partial, should be done before the rehearsal process is to take place. If there is such a significant cut as to cancel the show, the head of the school should have been aware of the information in the script that might prove problematic. We wouldn't be seeing articles like this in the NY Times if the leaders in the school systems would just pay attention to what is happening in the theaters before it gets far along in the process.

The fact that they made cuts, while understood, sort of bothers me. Yes, there are things in the show of a "questionable" nature for youth, but the "youth" in high school should be able to handle the subjects involved in RENT. Now, I understand the high school has an obligation to the rest of the school district, but the topics RENT covers and the messages it conveys are all important political and cultural messages that everyone in this day in age SHOULD be talking about. What better way than art to start the conversation. I'm glad the show is still going to happen, but I still disagree with the cuts.
