Foolproof ‘Our Town’ Crumbles Under Urban Renewal

Bloomberg.com: Arts and Culture: "If ever there was a foolproof American play, it is Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town.” I have seen professional and amateur productions, college and high-school performances, movie and opera versions, and all, even the poorest, had some kernel of good in them. But not even “Our Town” is David Cromer-proof."

I'm confused. Is this review a joke? This show was literally the best show I have seen in the last few years. I saw it in Chicago, and went to New York just to see the show again. EVERYONE should see this production.

While i think it is a rather brazen statement to note that it is hard to mess up 'Our Town,' it is easy to do with amateurs, high schools etc. because it requires lessof a set and allows a huge cast, both of which these types of venues often have access to. I don't think it is fair to use these reasons to speak to actor's abilities in these settings, as often they are very good and get into their roles. Perhaps this staging was just cast very badly, perhaps it took the essence of the show away. But i am also glad that he tried to do this. Taking risks makes theatre grow. I'm glad people are still willing to try. Clearly someone thought it was worth it, and inspiring.
