Seeking Shelter From the Storm

Backstage: "Like many managing directors, Dean Gladden of Houston's Alley Theatre has had to adjust to the sharp downturn in the economy. After the stock market began to slide, institutions cut their donations to the Alley by at least 50 percent or stopped giving altogether. Adding to his burden are the effects of Hurricane Ike and the recent drop-off in oil prices, which is likely to curtail contributions from local companies in the next fiscal year."

It is so unfortunate that prestigious theatres like the Alley would fall prey to not only economic crisis but also environmental. While I hope and believe that with time our industry will revive itself, I also think it is important time to take stock of the mistakes we made with management (both with personnel and money) and to look toward the future with a plan to improve and insulate from these sort of problems in the future. If we take this as an opportunity, we will learn and we will be better.

I agree that this can serve as a good learning experience for the future. The economy will always have its ups and downs, and the theatre world will continue to be directly affected by it, but if each time we gain a little more knowledge in how to handle the crisis, the theatre industry will be on much steadier ground
