New CMU drama head can't wait to mix art, high-tech

Post Gazette: "'I think a challenge facing the whole educational theater scene is new technology,' said Cooke, 55, deputy director and head of design at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney for 22 years. He has designed 100 productions during the past 30 years, from drama, opera and dance to puppetry and music theater."

"Preparing young artists to work in less traditional and more imaginative and challenging work environments is one of his goals."

Reading this article made me feel very optimistic about the new School of Drama head, Peter Cooke. His sense of enthusiasm and flexibility came through in the article and I'm so happy to hear it. One thing stood out to me in particular, his view that we should draw from and influence international theatre. Often, here at CMU, we get caught in a little bubble and rarely consider what other theatre artists are producing. Perhaps Mr. Cooke's international connections might help us to become more aware of other kinds of performance art around the world.

I agree with Allison, reading the article made me very excited to meet Mr. Cooke, and ready for the changes he will bring to our program. The energy and enthusiasm he has about experiencing theater outside of our little bubble is very exciting.

I am excited that Peter not only wants to keep our standing in the theater community, but increase it. It seems that he is interested in tying the SOD into the larger CMU community more. Like Allison and Liz said, Peter seems to have a great enthusiasm for this program and I think he will do a great job a keeping what works and improving what needs improving. (I also think that Dick will be happy to go back to teaching more).

I'm very excited to see what new things peter will bring to the school. he seems very enthused to be coming and I know that it's a reciprocal feeling among the school as well.

As a BSA student, I am excited about incorporating the school into the rest of the university more. Sometimes I think many SOD students don't get to experience the great minds of the engineers, physics or cs majors. Having more collaboration between the schools would be very interesting. I think we could get some great new technology to use on stage!
