Economic downturn isn't playing well in theaters

Los Angeles Times: "When Gilbert Cates tries to explain the hard times facing the Geffen Playhouse, he turns to an analogy from his long experience as a film director and producer of television shows, including the annual Academy Awards telecast. Whenever studio heads talk about cutting the budget for one of his movie projects, Cates compares it to trimming an airplane."

Having worked for the Geffen Playhouse many times and knowing Gilbert and the rest of the staff, this is so sad to hear. The Geffen Playhouse is one of Los Angeles' best theatres outside of the CTG theatre group. I wonder how this economic downturn might affect young designer's like me hoping to get hired again to paint scenery and work on load-ins. Perhaps the $ per hour might drop, but then so might the quality of the willing workers. Perhaps, if the theatre hosted more LA Cultural events, it might receive more donations.
