Wall Street Journal: A must read for fashion, art?

Reuters: "The Wall Street Journal showcased its latest attempt to broaden its appeal beyond the business reader on Wednesday -- introducing a new, glossy weekend magazine devoted to high fashion, preppy sports and luxury travel."

At home I was always an avid reader of the WSJ's personal section, particularly articles relating to the fashion and movie industries (their movie reviewer, Joe Morgenstern, is potentially one of my favorite writers). My WSJ reading habits peter out during the school year as it is not one of the free newspapers available to university students. While my personal experiences make me enthusiastic for this magazine and I hope it maintains the WSJ's standard of quality, I am hesitant about any changes made to the newspaper after Murdoch's take-over.

What ever happened to newspapers reporting the news and staying out of your personal life? (Ok, I'm not sure this has ever been the case in my lifetime, but I wish it was) The media these days is reporting less and less hard news, and is becoming more involved in telling you (or rich people, in this case) how to live your life. I can understand wanting to read it for movie reviews or fashion news, but if you want hairstyling tips or advice on which Italian shoes to buy, why not pick up an issue of GQ? Leave the news to the newspapers, and the lifestyle content to the lifestyle magazines. Newspapers should do what they are meant to do - report the news, as accurately and impartially as possible.
