Tragedy in the Theater and a Bit of Drama Around It in the Getty Villa’s Staging of ‘Agamemnon’

NYTimes.com: "As the sun set over the Pacific Ocean on a recent September evening, washing the Malibu hills in a faded purple glow, the lights came up in ancient Greece, where Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, anxiously pondered whether to trade his daughter’s life for the chance to sail for Troy to rescue Helen and avenge his homeland’s honor."

This sounds like the perfect play to do at the perfect location. I find it interesting the similarities that exist between ancient Athens and modern day Malibu. First of all, the terrain and climate are very similar. L.A. is hot and dry with that big beautiful blue ocean, very similar to Greece. What is also interesting is the sense of cultural community that exists at the Getty Villa, because it is also one of the premiere art museums in the area. This blending of different aspects of culture creates that sense of community that I imagine existed in the Acropolis. So, how fitting to do Agamemnon simply because of the appropriateness of this newly constructed theatre and location!

I think that the residents have a right to be worried about noise and other issues. The theater has addressed them in their agreement. The prolonged disruption from the neighbors is a shame because of the amazing work the theater is doing.
