I have to say I also find it rather frustrating when complete amateurs are cast in plays, much less musicals. There is a place for that, and it's called high school or community theater. If I am going to see a new show, I want to it to be a good performance. If the script is great, but the execution horrendous, then the show will fail. It all comes down to the weakest link in the chain. Don't make it the actors, because everyone sees them.
The idea of this show is great. Getting new people on stage and doing a new, different play. In practice it might be much harder because the actors might need more experience or the play is a little too wacky. They should keep going and trying it out. It sounds like you can see some really interesting shows in the future.
