Somebody grab a Fly swatter

TheStar.com: "From bzzzzzz to zzzzzz.
That, alas, is the story of The Fly, the opera by David Cronenberg and Howard Shore that had its North American premiere yesterday afternoon at the Los Angeles Opera."

This sounded like such a horrible idea from the start that I am not at all surprised at the bad review. I hope they think twice the next time someone suggests remaking a cult classic sci-fi movie into a full-blown opera. Bad idea. Seriously now.

I am surprised that of all the Sci-fi movies/stories one could turn into an opera, someone decided to do this one. Even if someone is crazy enough to make a Sci-fi into an opera, there are certainly better ones then The Fly. I am sure there would be a cult following for any of these kind of performances, but never in my life would i believe that it would cause enough publicity to pay it off. this was just a bad idea all around.

This story reminds of the Robin Williams skit of God on Drugs. The platypus! Ok ok, you take a beaver.... and your cross it with a duck!

I have to admit that i would have love to seen this onstage just hear the music. Especially after a comment like this:

"Time and time again, the kindly disposed audience found themselves laughing inadvertently at lines that were never meant to be sung, such as "I can't live on sex and candy bars."

As a general rule, Hollywood blockbuster turned broadway musical is the first step to terrible shows (though commercially successful). See Legally Blonde, The Lord of The Rings, the Wedding Singer, etc. etc. etc. I can't imagine this being much better.
