Opera productions range from familiar to premieres

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Live opera in Pittsburgh will run the gamut from a baroque work to a premiere this season.
Pittsburgh Opera's season focuses on popular 19th-century repertoire, with mezzo-sopranos taking the lead in three of the four main stage productions."

Apparently the Opera is having a hard time convincing people to go see new work. I would have already thought that Grapes of Wrath was an opera, but apparently is not, and in turn is having a hard time selling to the normal opera audience. I would think the opera world, much like theater, would always be looking to new work, but it seems that they are content with their canon. yawn
