NEA Chair to Step Down

Backstage: "National Endowment for the Arts chairman Dana Gioia announced today that he will resign in January 2009 to pursue writing and a part-time position at the Aspen Institute as director of the Harman/Eisner Program in the Arts."

I guess this proves that he was the right person for the job. Not only did he have the leadership, organizational, and management skills to accomplish a great deal during his tenure, but he is also an artist himself. We need people in arts management who understand and identify with the artists. By giving up such a big position to be a writer, Mr. Gioia proves that he cares about the arts.

This makes the upcoming election more important than it already was. January 09 is an interesting time for the head of the NEA to resign. I wonder what other influences he had in making his decision other than to go back to writing. Hopefully the new President will still be able to significantly fund the arts with all of the campaign mentioned tax cuts, spiraling economy and uncertain futures.
