London's Green Theatre Program Debuts
Stage-directions: "The Mayor of London’s Green Theatre Program, designed to help the theatre industry reduce its impact on the environment and improve its sustainability without compromising artistic standards, is now underway, according to White Light, a member of the working party that has been putting the plan together over the last year."

I understand the man's viewpoint that theater is not exactly 'green' friendly, but I think he comes off a rather harsh on his statements. For example, when he comments that he wants to change how much "material and energy is wasted on the creation of theater," it comes off like it's a worthless art and that energy and time should be spent elsewhere. The article also doesn't specify his target theaters. Regional? Commercial? There are so many different standards in various theaters that I don't think you can force a standard on everyone.
I think its fantastic that London is making a stand in the direction of being green. Theatre is a huge art form that uses up tons of resources, so it is only acceptable for artists to try and conserve as much as possible. Also, generally, drama people are more liberal and i really think the industry as a whole could make a big impact on the green front if everyone worked together.
I have always been bothered at how much waste there is in the theatre world. From construction materials to energy, it's pretty ridiculous if you think about it. I am glad to hear that London is taking steps to make its theatres "green friendly." Let's hope their work paves the way for more theatres in the future.
Theatre definitely needs to become more involved in the green movement. If we recycle materials during the strike of a show, not only would we save money on materials for the next show but we would reduce our waste output. Also, there is a lot of theatre preaching about taking care of the environment. In order to not be hypocrites we need to follow our own advice and make an effort to preserve the environment.
I really appreciate the fact of green theater. Theater can say many political statements with its performances, but her is one with the mere design of the theater itself. By this movement, theaters may even end up saving money on energy and materials; it lays a good example for all theater-goers.
