IATSE to Cover All Obama Campaign Events

-||- IATSE National -||: "The Obama for America campaign has signed with the IATSE to cover all events held in support of Barack Obama’s bid to become President of the United States. The contract, which became effective Sept. 5, includes jurisdiction over stagecraft, building, electrical, sound, rigging, audio-visual, properties, wardrobe, and other related work traditionally under the IA’s purview. It will run until Nov. 5, the day after the national election."

This is a great move by Obama to reinforce his support of union labor. He could have just signed with a big production company, we know his campaign has the money. By dealing directly with IATSE, however, he frees up money for other things, while proving that he supports the unions. I think that things like this might sway a lot of working-class union voters.

I had no idea that Obama's camp had done this until I read this article. What a great move to show his support for unions AND give IATSE members employment for a few months. I agree with Sam: getting word out about this may encourage working-class union voters to vote for Obama.

I keep reading articles about IATSE lately. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, honestly. Mostly because locking out this campaign event brings a lot of work for IATSE and opens up that kind of work but it also shuts out anyone else that may have been doing it. Unions are bittersweet for me.
