Chicago hosts 'The Century' test

Variety: "The Goodman Theater isn't calling the tuner 'The Turn of the Century' a Broadway tryout. But with a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (the 'Jersey Boys' writing team), producer Elizabeth I. McCann attached, director Tommy Tune and stars Jeff Daniels and Rachel York, can New York be far behind?"

This sounds like a fun show to watch! I hope it actually makes it to broadway as they hoped. It would also bring a better intellectual air to Broadway as currently it is holding musicals like the Little Mermaid and Shrek. This sounds like a breath of fresh air. I'd love to see it.

I was wondering when The Goodman would make its rebuttal against Steppenwolf. Almost to say, "Look, we can do it too!". However, what differs in this production is that The Goodman down right plans to be on Broadway. They know it all the way down to their all-star cast (if you consider Jeff Daniels a worthy household name) and ridiculous budget. The Steppenwolf wasn't brought to broadway because of these attributes, in a sense all they needed was a great play to attract audiences. I'm interested to see how far The Goodman will fall if they don't make it.

Not really sure what to think about this one yet. I guess the commercial money is just like any non-for-profit going out in search of more money... It does sound like an interesting story, even though the music is not original. Can't anyone write anything for themselves any more, or at least half of what gets to Broadway.

Marshall Brickman's comment about working in Chicago over New York and how it is nice to have very thing so close should remind us all that we are working in a collaborative environment. Something that gets lost in the business some times.
