Teens have to hustle for summer work

Marketplace: "Teens are going to have a tough time landing a summer job this year. They'll be competing with laid-off workers for the food service or retail work teens typically sign up for over summer vacation."

For people in our industry this isn't very new news. Upperclassmen bump out freshman, graduates bump out upperclassmen, and the union rules all. We don't work for the money so pay isn't a huge factor, but a recession does spell disaster for ticket sales. So even in a skill market as specialized as theatre, we still see seven levels of suck for us.

I find this information really interesting in combination with this spring's statistics on college admissions rates at an all time low. Not only are young people going to be competing for low paying jobs, but there are going to be even more young people looking for these jobs than before. It doesn't make And if I weren't nervous enough about finding a second job this summer...
I wonder when the falling economy is really going to wake everyone up. It's only going to get harder for our generation, and we're the ones that are going to have to figure out how to deal with it.

I agree with Corinna in that I'm surprised America isn't waking up about economic issues. I've been watching CNN as I go to sleep each night, but when they talk about the economy, I usually have to turn it off because I am so nervous about the future of the economy. I agree with CNN that the economy should be issue #1 with America during this election season. Now, one way to help it is by ending the war, which is also a huge issue. This really is part of the greater economic issue, though. We need to stop pumping $3 billion into Iraq and pump it into our own economy.

I wonder if this article is talking more about younger teens than college aged ones. A lot of people I went to high school with haven't had real jobs during the summer; they have internships or volunteer. Younger teens generally have those miserable retail or food service industry jobs.

Looks like a good time to take electives at a community college..

and the year before that, and the year before that...

finding summer jobs has been a hassle since forever (at least in my memory). the current economic depression, lack of trust of teenagers, and lack of education of highschool students all add up to a pretty lousy summer experience.

fortunately, schools are more likely to accept their own students for summer employment in education programs. extra-curricular activites (at least for me) have been extending into the summer as well, with faculty advisors and students continuing their regular meetings, and providing things to do during those long 3 months

Although this may be more relevent in certain cities, this doesn't seem like a new battle for the majority of the nation. Competition has always been tough to for teenagers and summer jobs. I know that my personal battle with summer job has always been up against returning employees and European imports in the state merely just to work summers.
