Boomer nostalgia invades Broadway

chicagotribune.com: "The rise of Barack Obama is seen by some as a final shift from the Boomer-ish battles of the '60s, the emblematic Jane Fonda versus John Wayne debate. Time magazine's Joe Klein has said: 'Everyone's sick of the Boomers. I'm sick of them, and I'm one of them.'"

I think this article is interesting because it suggests that the consumer has a lot of power to drive the market and that art relies heavily on the make up of the audience. It makes me wonder what sort of cultural phenomena will be resurrected for our generation when we're the ones buying all the tickets. I also wonder whether this kind of Boomer-driven work can last once a younger group of theatre makers are the ones in charge, who won't necessarily understand what "sells" and who this audience is. To what extent can we cater to an audience when we don't understand them ourselves?

I really liked this article. Baby Boomers run the world. Maybe the fact that theater caters to Baby Boomers is the reason for the decline. I agree with Corinna, it will be exciting to see what happens when the upcoming generation get their chance.
