Theatre Breaks Barriers for Disabled Actors

Backstage: "Director Ike Schambelan had a problem. The founder of Theater by the Blind in Manhattan wanted to cast company regular Ann Marie Morelli as Tatiana and Hermia in his production of A Midsummer Night's Dream last year. However, Morelli's multiple sclerosis kept her in a wheelchair."

I am glad that they made the choice to hire a blind actress for the role. This is almost like a movement for disable people in theater. It poses the production with challenges, however one it is overcome the production is more polished than ever. it also gives the disabled a second chance in their career to be in theater.

This is terrific, both as an article and as a society-based improvement. It is so frustrating that so many places still have yet to become accessible to everyone, and is even more frustrating that it takes so much effort to remember this fact, especially for those who do not encounter some level of disability daily. Finally, roles are closer to being cast by talent, and less by outside pressures and even worse, convenience.
