Vehicles: Gigantic Mech Animals are a Seriously Stylish Way to Travel

Gizmodo:

"Les Machines de l'ile de Nantes are gigantic mechanical animal vehicles currently on display in the French city of Nantes. While they just look like giant models, these things are fully functioning vehicles that people can ride in. Don't believe me? Check out the video of the elephant, full of people, lurching through town after the jump, you doubter."

It is pretty amazing to see this combination of magnificent artwork and design with the engineering needed underneath to make these contraptions work. It would have been truly amazing if the elephant in the video actually supported itself on the legs that make a walking motion (one can see that it is supported by a frame with wheels), but nonetheless they still look pretty cool.

On a side note, the photo of the squid reminds me a lot of the squid in the defunct Disney World ride 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

This is a pretty cool thing that has been developed. This is also very impractical so I am not sure how it might be used in the real world...It is, however, a cool thing. The elephant has to be the best one. I would like to see what other ones they come up with.
