Theater by the Blind Changes Name

Backstage: "After 29 years, Theater by the Blind is changing its name to Theater Breaking Through Barriers. The company will continue its commitment to blind and vision-impaired artists, but it has expanded its mission to include performers with a range of disabilities."

This is really exciting to hear about a company committed to helping the disabled find opportunities to perform. I think people with disabilities are so often overlooked when we talk about casting discrimination, and in general you don't see the disabled in theatre because its so much more challenging for them to get started in the first place.

This sounds great. The inclusion of other disabilities will only improve the theatre. The majority of the time, there is little better reason to prevent someone with a disability from performing, other than a building not meeting correct codes. As Corinna mentioned, it is a group rarely mentioned when considering discrimination in casting, when in many instances, playing a character written as white by an African American is no different than playing a walking character by an actor in a wheelchair
