MTV to find new 'Blonde' star

Variety: "Call it the Grecian formula: Like 'You're the One that I Want,' the reality show that cast the recent Rialto revival of 'Grease,' Broadway tuner 'Legally Blonde' is going to MTV to find its next Elle Woods."

I find it very unique that MTV is making such an effort to bring theatre to the television. It is obviously driven by the monetary benefits, but it sounds like they could be paving the road for a new trend. While I despise the idea of another "American Idol" contest show, it may help expose the young MTV target audience to theatre, which they may have not been interested in before.

Though maybe Kevin is right about paving a road for a new trend or venue for theatre.. this article upsets me. I really tried not to watch the show when it was airing on TV but I couldn't help but stand in front of the TV with my jaw to the floor in awe of how horrid it was. Visually I thought it was just.. embarrassing. Things like this make me very protective of what we do because I feel that many times good quality craft and form is sacrificed in order to rack in more tickets and publicity.

I was worried what the MTV and the Legally Blond will do together after airing the Broadway show on MTV, but I guess this is their next new project! Good for them, since the world is in scarce of the writers and we always have more spots for the new reality shows that involves blond! And this is WHY I love what I do, because we're being paid to do what we could be doing in a Starbucks in Downtown LA, looking at blond women singing their lungs off in front of people.

I always felt that theatre was in a lot of ways a higher art. Not to say that people who do theatre are better than other performers or crewpersons, but all of the cross integration between film TV and theatre is making me feel like in a lot of ways the integrity of theatre is being cheapened in a way. Why is it that we feel that we need to create TV reality shows in order to cast Broadway musicals. I know the writers strike is bringing television programming to a new low, but this is pretty low.

Kevin's point is interesting that MTV is possibly paving a road for new means of theatre distribution, but I have a hard time calling anything that can be viewed on TV theatre. If MTV wants to make another legally blond movie go for it, but don't attach theatre's name to something it is not. Two different Mediums each with its own characteristics.

Haha yay that mean there is going to be lot of drama in the casting of the new Elle Woods. I am eager to watch the different kinds of talent the west and east coast alike have to offer. I just hope they do not make a a fool out of themseleves out of this whole ordeal.
