"Betrayal" of Iraqi interpreters comes to NY stage

Yahoo! News: "Iraqi doctor turned film-maker Omer Salih Mahdi had the strange experience of seeing his life portrayed on stage this weekend at a preview performance of 'Betrayed,' a play about Iraqis who worked for Americans."

I feel like the comments from mahdi might have been a little modest. it must be an unusual experience to see a performance that tells of the actual events your experienced, and i imagine that it might be a little frustrating too. it could never fully convey the experience, and for something as serious as these events there is no telling how much of the truth was actually there. i am curious to see the movie that Mahdi made and compare the two.

I think this demonstrates a really powerful way in which theatre communicates with the public. Americans are totally unaware of what goes on in the Middle East and how people relate to each other. Even when we hear about the horrors or the complications of everyday life, or how people across the divide interact, its impossible to imagine it compared to our relatively safe quotidienne lives in the west. Showing this to the public via film or live theatre is a really important step in my opinion to better informing the public for decision-making and policy-making purposes.
