Campy "Xanadu" sees Broadway fortunes rise

Seattle Times Newspaper: "Dramas may be dominating New York's fall season, but what really fuels the Broadway economy are big new musicals. But so far, Broadway is having to make do with 'Xanadu' — and with a hulking musical creature-feature direct from Seattle, 'Young Frankenstein.'"

Well this is just a given. You can even tell by the author's attitude that "Xanadu" really isn't the kind of musical that deserves this kind of revenue. If anything, they were just very fortunate to not have been shut down. It's a shame that there might even be stronger shows in New York, however as long as shows like "Xanadu" are stamped with that infamous "BROADWAY" label, they will continue to take advantage of this so called free-for-all that is the Local 1 stagehand strike.

however, i think it is good that more modest shows like this one are competing with multi million shows like young frankenstein, showing that you don't need to spend millions to make a hit.

its no surprise that they are banking. I'm sure all the little kids that are being forced to see it by parents too afraid to wander in to "off" and "off off" territory feel a bit dazed. If this were anyone's "my first musical" there should be a disclaimer that there is in fact other theater to be seen. At least the show is now able to pay their constant medical bills for their cast.

I think its funny that Young Frankenstein took a great movie and made a so so musical and Xanadu springs from a stupid movie and becomes a runaway success. Granted, its partly because of the strike that people are going to see something so out of left field, but its good to see something thats more than just its hype and history.

I think that although this strike is hurting alot of people that it is also helping ours at the same time. This show compared to the others is not considered a big hit or by any standards smash, but with this strike people are looking for what is available on Broadway, which is few at the moment. So this show is not only getting more income because of the strike, but probably will be seen in a different light even after the strike is over when word about it spreads. Its a good thing for them to get the attention when they normally would not be getting this amount.

ABout a month ago, I made a comment on one of the articles about Xanadu not making it too much longer. It has not been very well received from a critics standpoint, and the movie was considered a flop when it was first released. The strike has absolutely saved this show, but I still feel that once teh strike is resolved, this show probably only has a few more months left in it.
