Royal Shakespeare Company

New York Times: "A $5 million donation to the Royal Shakespeare Company for its planned new theater in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, is the largest gift from an American in the company’s history. The contribution, scheduled to be announced today, comes from Chris Abele, a 40-year-old philanthropist who lives in Milwaukee."

This is great news for the company, but even better for those who love Willie Shakes! A theatre in the city that Shakespeare was born in is an exciting proposition. The fact that an American is giving $5 million of his money to The Royal Shakespeare Company says allot about the impact that his plays have had upon all of the theatrical community, and the world at large.

I think the amount is a little too much considering it isn't an non-profit organization. We all know the company is doing a lot of great things, but I feel like money like that should be taken a little more carefully. But congrats to people at Royal Shakes!!

this is a hefty sum of money to be given to any organization, but in comparision to what they are attempting to raise overall it really is just a fraction. the price tag on this endeavor is outrageous, but if all goes to plan it seems that it could quickly become a leader in producing theatre of a high degree. it will be interesting to see what happens with this organization in the next decade.

Its great that he found a way to invest his money in something he clearly loves and supports. I agree with his assestment that people aren't willing to put money towards long term goals. Also its a great way to bring the Royal Shakespeare company to the U.S. more often!

It's great that he's willing to give so much money for the arts. I'm all about contribution, but normally I would argue that some of that money might be more useful for his community. The Royal Shakespeare Company, god knows, isn't going to go under any time soon. However, he did found the Milwaukee Shakespeare Company, so he earns points in my book. The picture at the top of the article made me laugh though. It's a little cheesy.
