Preview: Leatherman’s Skeletool

Toolmonger: "Leatherman’s new Skeletool is a stripped down, lightweight (five ounces!) multi-tool with all the tools you expect from a Leatherman: a screwdriver, a knife, and pliers. And unlike with previous Leathermans, the knife and the bottle opener (the hook at the back) are accessible without opening the tool."

Cool. I'm always happy to see innovations in tools and since most of us carry some type of multi-tool it's one we might actually use. The review is wrong about one thing though, the Leatherman Wave has the blades on the outside so you don't have to open it to get to them, also plenty of other multi-tools do the same thing.

I like that Leatherman is getting down to the basics. It seems that this is a multi-tool that can fit in your pocket and be carried around with you on a day to day basis. This is nice for people who want to be prepared all the time but don’t want to have the Leatherman pouch on their belt all the time. A Leatherman is a tool that you need to hold in your hand an look at and use before you can actually make up your mind about it but this looks like it has much potential.

As a multi-tool and knife user this product makes me happy because it is a multitool without all the extraneous tools that get in the way. Sheer size is the main reason i usually forget the tool and go for a simple single blade knife, but those pliers are so useful. I think this tool offersw the happy medium for the people like me who need multi-tool versatility, with knife simplicity.

I originally had a leatherman, but I grew to like my gerber after a short period just becaue it was so much easier to use(it was pretty old). But it seems like Leatherman is making a comeback and it might be worth checking out the market again. Another handy tool that I have added to my belt is a box cutter. If I keep it in good shape, it works just as well as a knife.

I'm not so happy about this one. I love my Leathermans with a passion, but I just got a new one two days ago. Finaly they win some major points on the style and strength side, but am I really willing to spend another $100 after I just droped the same amount on a tool with a 48 piece bit kit? Maybe if I find it cheap because it does look very cool.
