Carnegie Mellon entering newest space race

Post Gazette: "Google and the X Prize Foundation are offering the prize to any company that can land a rocket on the moon and release a robotic rover onto the lunar surface to trek at least 1,312 feet and beam back to Earth self-portraits, panoramic views and real-time videos."

i love that our school is ahead of the game in every aspect of technology and the arts. its such a great mix... we have the best of both worlds and were not afraid to blend and show our stuff... how cool would it be if in the near future there was a giant merge between all of the different schools and a push for a giant project. beyond exciting. cmu has done it again....space...

I love this line of the article- “Dr. Whittaker said he will establish the Carnegie Mellon team and find partners with experience in launching spacecraft and landing payloads.” Launching spacecraft and landing payloads. Naturally. I am always reminded of how fortunate I am to be in the SOD surrounded by such a talented group of peers and professors…and then you read an article like this and you are reminded that the rest of the school is just as brilliant. Of course we would be involved in a moon race; I don’t know why I was so in awe at first. This is great, and I love that during the metals stagecraft, Ben took us to see some of the robots that were mentioned. This is just, really awesome.

not only would it be awesome if Carnegie Mellon won but the students working on the project would be able to get any job they wanted after that. now that is something i want on my resumee. i dont even understand half the technical vocabulary in this article and yet knowing that im living with all these really smart...rocket scientists makes me so happy!

That's crazy to me that this company wants to see someone do that. It seems like one of the craziest contests I've ever heard of and i am shocked that Carnegie Mellon is going to try to pull it off. I's sure they can but I cant fathom how you would be able to do this and pull it off but i hope CMU wins.

There was a fascinating series of shows on Nova about "The Great Robot Race." Carnegie Mellon and Stanford were the two biggest contenders in making cars that can drive themselves through an off-road course. Carnegie Mellon has the amazing ability to excel in a world outside of academics and compete with large corporations in competitions such as these.

I am also glad to see competitions like this encourage the idea of exploring space through private companies instead of just through government programs. That is possibly the biggest way to accelerate space exploration, is to include the corporate sector.

I was just discussing this over the summer. How one of the most important things for are country to be focusing on is the progression of our involvement in space. And like Kevin said, it's a HUGE help to have individual companies tackling this challenge now instead of the government.

It's also great to be able to say "this is my school!". We are constantly pushing to greater things. There is no satisfaction with just staying with what we have. There has to be more out there. With this kind of drive, there is really no end to the kind of accomplishments that can be achieved!

I remember observing that the coolest thing about Carnegie Mellon is that we do excel in everything we do. We are on of the top Drama schools in the country, but we are also planning to send rockets to the moon. We are just good at everything. Which reminds me why I love Carnegie Mellon

This is not a surprise to me. This is the kind of venture Carnegie Mellon undertakes that builds up the reputation it has to this date. I over heard about that U.S. government funded project and how there are U.S. soldiers guarding the building because it is supposedly top secret. True or false, it's just amazing.
I also heard about the architectural department undergoing a new project for the old steel mill. It is about time. I hope it turns out awesome!
