BRAVO, IT'S FREE

New York Post: "THEY came, they clapped, they had lunch . . . then clapped and cried and clapped some more. The Metropolitan Opera yesterday opened its doors for a free dress rehearsal, and 3,000 people were only too happy to take a seat. Or stand."

First off - I am so jealous. For reasons unbeknownst to myself I have not actually been in the Metropolitan Opera. I think it's amazing that they offered a free open dress to the public. It's really great. Tickets are so expensive, which is probably one of the things that deters people from attending, but this gives the people who normally wouldn't spend the money a chance to see something really remarkable.

I think that this is really good move on the part of the Met. Exposing more people to opera can only help their ticket sales, and it looks like the group that came to the ticket sales probably wouldn't be able to afford (or want to pay for) normal tickets.

the thing about opera is that its not the most accessible form of theatre. its not easy to get in and its not the easiest to understand. so for young audiences its not the most appealing. free tickets to a dress rehearsal is a wonderful idea. it would serve to wet the palate for the entire generation. the last opera i saw was la boheme at lincoln center and i would not have gone had i not gotten student discounted tickets. it was probably one of the most beautiful productions i have ever seen.

Free tickets to a dress rehearsal are a great idea. First they allow people who would not normally attend such a show a chance. Second of all they have to help their ticket sales for the actual performances. If its such a great show they will tell their friends they have to see it, and they will tell their friends. Word of mouth I think can be the strongest form of advertising.
