CALL YOUR SENATOR NOW! Senate trying to force colleges to buy snoopware for copyright enforcement

Boing Boing: : "Major copyright holders are backing a legislative proposal to make colleges do their dirty work. The Higher Education Act is supposed to make going to college more affordable, but, under a last-minute amendment, certain schools would risk losing federal funding for student aid if they don't divert funds away from education and toward policing corporate copyrighted content on their campus network."

Okay. So, the government wants to prevent copy right infringement and thus plans to potentially single out a small handful of schools to track people's online activity, resulting in only catching maybe another small handful of people across the entire country for a very small crime. Um... Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that immigration reform thing still unresolved? And that whole war we've got going on?

Seriously, seems like they would have other things to worry about. I'm all for people not having their money stolen for their art, but this does not look like a very effective way of working towards that goal.

Aside from the fact that it is inherently unfair to single out a single group of organizations (and apparently only a random 25 out of thousands of those organizations) to patrol an issue that is neither their control nor really under their jurisdiction, this seems like a ridiculously inefficient and intrusive way to handle copyright infringement.
It also seems to place colleges in the place of police rather than educator, which is rather bizarre. Perhaps those whose art is being ripped off should take a more central role in the process of finding an effective way to stop the ripping off.
