Cats

Pittsburgh City Paper: "This late in the game it's pointless to talk about what a bad show Cats is. Ever since its Broadway opening, in 1982, minds more astute and pens far defter than mine have weighed in on its lack of quality. The Village Voice's Michael Feingold said, among other things, '[Andrew Lloyd Webber's] music is not terrible ... if you don't mind its being so soiled from previous use.'"

Why is this show still going? It has become one of those productions where elementary schools put it on because all the students can be little house pets in home-made leotards, and run around on stage to a CD and have the entire audience videotaping and smiling with glee that their child is doing a Broadway musical…oh yeah, we have all been there.

I must confess however, I use to watch the video and pretend I was the white cat…

I adore Ted Hoover to no end. He says everything that you're trying to justify in your mind as you're leaving a performance ("Oh, well, you have to admit: it IS a pretty creative concept...") and completely justifies your opinion, making you feel that much better about being a bitch to the cast and creative team behind their backs.

I remember being in about third grade when I heard of Cats, I had know idea what it was about, but assumed that the title Cats was some sort of metaphor for something deeper. When I found out it was actually about cats I was absolutely amazed. I think it says something that a third grader is dissapointed by the story line.
