Nonprofit theater goes commercial

News: Show Business Weekly: "Everyone knows creativity is the cornerstone of putting on a good play. But in the world of nonprofit theater, where venues in New York and across the country endure a daily struggle to stay afloat, that creativity is increasingly being applied to the administrative end of the business."

Wow - talk about blurring the lines. At what point is advertising still non-profit? The fear here is that eventually the non-profits will also be getting sponsorship from advertisers if their products are featured in the show...

I know that Hollywood is considered a big bad for profit, but right now there is a lot of struggle to keep the integrity of the arts and creativity in light of the need to make a profit on hugely expensive enterprises.

I hope NPOs can stear clear of these problems.

After all, money is important. Nonprofit has more and more "competitor" right now. So they absolutely need to figure out a way to survive only if they still keep their artistic objetive .

It seems as if non-profit art venues (i.e. NPR, PBS) have fallen victim to the "free riders" of viewership. Donations and pledge money from interested and committed parties no longer floats the boat - let them reap the benefits of advertising, lord knows everyone else does...

The idea tat art exists for arts sake, notwithstanding, it cannot be oiverlooked that administrative and operations costs associated with 'staying alive" must be met. While I am not a big proponent of the notion of corporatizing theatre, I think its essential not to overlook that a need which must be met exists. Is it worse to acknowledge a sponsor or to go dark?

What is the difference between Honda parking new cars in front of Phipps, or this? Sponsorship is a part of contribuited income, and if it helps pay the bills, and it does not go up against your mission vission and vaules, then there is no harm. It is no different then ordering from the Pepsi guys, and getting free Pepsi cups to use at your conssesions stand. Product placement happens all the time and we do not notice it, it just needs to be done correctly and not lose focus on the art.
