Wilhelm Scream - Hollywood's favorite scream

Boing Boing: "A single scream, recorded for the 1951 film 'Distant Drums,' has made its way into dozens of films, games and TV shows. Afficianados call it the 'Wilhelm Scream' and have cataloged many of the films in which it appeared, from Hercules to Pirates of the Caribbean, The X-Files to the short 'Golden Dreams' film at Disney California Adventure."

I really wish this article had had a sound clip of the scream. Having minimal (but some) experience working with sound effects I know that it is incredibly difficult to get realistic-sounding human noises that fit with the film/performance. It doesn't surprise me that a few sound effects (one of which being the Wilhelm Scream identified in this article) that are really good stick around and reappear for a long time. I think the cool part is that someone actually noticed. - Maddie Regan

It is so interesting the things people discover when they are not looking for them. The guy who named the Wilhelm Scream, who had once been interested in finding its origin, just happens to get access to WB and finds out the actual source of the scream. Almost a lil movie-esque. I wish there was a sound clip as well, just to see if I recognized it from anywhere else. This article also makes me wonder if the various high-pitched woman's screams in movies are actually one also being repeated.

Um, I know for a fact that the same thunder and lightning sound effect is in tons of movies and to top that off there is one door closing sound effect that I constantly hear. I'm sure normal people don't recognize these things, but then again I am probably one out of a lot who can't watch movies anymore without analyzing them. Damn Drama School.
