Assistant Scene Shop Foreman

The American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.), one of the nation’s leading resident professional theaters and a recipient of a Tony award for outstanding theater performance and training, is a 39 year old non-profit regional theater and training institution that nurtures the art of live theater through dynamic productions, intensive actor training in its Conservatory, and an ongoing dialogue with the community. The Assistant Scene Shop Foreman will lead and participate in the execution of the set designs for all Geary productions and other projects in the Scene Shop as determined by ACT. The Assistant Foreman, at times, will also provide supervision of the stage crews during load-ins. The Assistant Foreman will insure that the Scene Shop’s equipment, personnel and practices are safe and operating efficiently at all times.

The Assistant Scene Shop Foreman will collaborate with the Technical Director/Scene Shop Foreman in developing construction methods and build schedules. The Assistant Foreman will help determine crew calls and make calls to the Local 16 office for overhire when needed. The Assistant Foreman will advise the TD/SF of the shop’s equipment, hardware and materials status. The Assistant Foreman will be responsible for the orderly storage of stock scenery and for shop vehicles.

The Assistant Scene Shop Foreman reports directly to the Scene Shop Foreman. The Assistant Foreman will supervise IA Mechanics, Extras and other overhire crew in the Scene Shop.

Starts July 31, 2006 and goes through June 17, 2007. Position requirements include three years professional experience in a regional theater or commercial shop. Extensive knowledge of standard theatrical scene shop practices, equipment and safety standards, thorough knowledge of the materials used including wood, metals, plastics, adhesives, paints and experience with automation systems, hydraulics, theatrical rigging. Good sense of humor, hard working, supervisory experience. Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds. A clean DMV record and current Drivers license required.

The Assistant Scene Shop Foreman is a seasonal position covered under A.C.T.’s collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 16. Projected dates for the 2006-2007 season are July 31, 2006 through June 17, 2007.
