Carnegie Mellon Clips_News: "USS Requin dives into world of high tech
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | May 12
In its day, the USS Requin set standards in technological advancement. Starting today, Carnegie Science Center visitors will see some 21st-century technology at work deep inside the World War II-era submarine. 'Living History' is a multimedia installation designed by graduate students from Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center, or ETC. Several compartments in the Requin's interior have been outfitted with a series of interactive displays designed to explain more about the sub and its crew. ... The project cost less than $20,000, a fraction of what a commercial exhibit design company would have charged, said ETC executive producer and co-founder Don Marinelli. The ETC is an interdisciplinary master's program that combines the resources of Carnegie Mellon's College of Fine Arts and School of Computer Science. Its mission is to develop new technologies for entertainment and educational applications. Retrofitting the Requin was an opportunity too great to miss, Mr. Marinelli said. The team of Carnegie Mellon students benefited, too. Installing equipment in such a unique environment gave them plenty of problem-solving experience. 'This is a real-world laboratory,' Mr. Marinelli said.

National Endowment for the Arts

The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) during the week of May 15. Please take a moment to urge your House member to support an increase for the NEA ? and, just as important, to oppose any proposed decrease. The more that House members hear from constituents in these crucial weeks leading up to the vote, the more likely they are to vote the right way. Writing your Members of Congress takes just two minutes.

If you go to you will find the site for Americans for the Arts where there is a remarkably easy way to contact your Senators and Congressman/woman. It will take you less time than it takes to read this email.

On May 4, the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee approved a bill which offers no increase in funding for the NEA in FY 2007. Instead, the bill "level-funds" NEA spending at last year's level of $124.4 million.

Next week the full Appropriations Committee will take up the bill, followed by the full House voting on the measure the week of May 15. We expect that during floor consideration of the bill, Congressional Arts Caucus co-chairs Reps. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Chris Shays (R-CT) will offer an amendment to increase NEA funding. Also, NEA opponents probably would offer amendments to decrease funding. In past years, the House has approved the Slaughter-Shays amendments and has defeated anti-NEA amendments.

Again, the House debate is now scheduled to take place during the week of May 15. If you go to you will find the site for Americans for the Arts.

Edited: Squirrel costume

Squirrel costume
------------
Karaoke Ice is a public art project by award-winning artists Marina Zurkow, Katie Salen and Nancy Nowacek. It will premiere in San Jose for the ZeroOne: Art on the Edge Biennial in August 2006 (http://isea2006.sjsu.edu/). We are seeking a costume designer/ props maker to work on the creation of a man-sized SQUIRREL HEAD and SQUIRREL TAIL. The design will be more like a polygon construction from the world of 3D modeling, rather than a plush toy head (it will be 90+ degrees in San Jose in August). Karaoke Ice is part mobile karaoke recording stage, and part ice cream truck. The truck is run by REMEDIOS the SQUIRREL CUB, who is the truck’s best friend, an indie rocker karaoke MC and master of cheap magic. The truck gives away free icy pops and provides a karaoke stage for audiences to perform popular songs recomposed in the vernacular of tinkly ice cream truck music. More info on the project is available at http://www.o-matic.com/isea The prop artist will have to make a duplicate version of the costume for back up. Small honorarium offered, plus materials. Excellent exposure opportunity and full crediting. You may email us for more information and visual references. Please email work samples and resume to marina@o-matic.com

Internship

(Technically unoffical posting, but valid none the less):

California Shakespeare Theatre, a LORT C outdoor summer theatre in
Berkeley, CA seeks a carpentry intern for it's 4-show season.

The internship is not paid, we do not provide housing. The hours are
reasonable, the experience is good (you're a member of a 5 person shop,
so you actually build things and probably manage overhire, you're not
"just an intern"). The first show opens in June (the shop is running
now), the last show closes in October.

I was the ATD the last two years at the theatre, my other job has gotten
too busy to be able to go back (much as I'd like to), and I can answer
questions folks have about it.

Interested parties should e-mail their resume and a brief cover letter
to the TD, Dave Nowakowski - dave@calshakes.org

20th Century North American Drama

University Libraries have purchased the full-text play database 20th Century North American Drama. Some of you will remember that we had conversations about this about two years ago. Your input has not been for naught! Thanks to the University Libraries Expensive Purchase Committee for reviewing and finally approving the proposal to purchase this.

20thC NAM is growing with more than 800 plays in the database presently. When completed it will contain 2,000 plays. The playscripts and information related to the plays and playwrights is searchable using the same deep searching capabilities as our two other full-text play databases Asian American Drama and Black Drama.

From the library home page link via Databases by Subject. http://www.library.cmu.edu/search/db/nadrlive.html or Databases by Name.
